The African American Composer Initiative presents its 9th annual Eastside College Prep Benefit Concerts, celebrating music by African American composers: spirituals, songs, ballads, instrumentals, and jazz. Concerts feature vocal and instrumental music drawn from the traditions of spirituals, jazz, blues, ballads, popular, and concert music. Represented are some of the founders of the spirituals preservation movement: Roland Hayes, Hal Johnson, and Harry Burleigh; celebrated masters of concert music, William Grant Still and Florence Price, jazz greats Billy Strayhorn and Thelonius Monk, and outstanding composers of today: Valerie Capers, Regina Baiocchi, Roxanna Wright, Andre Meyers, John Robinson, Charles Lloyd, and Charles Brown. Performed by the musicians of AACI: Sopranos Yolanda Rhodes and Roxanna Wright, tenor Othello Jefferson, vocalists/pianists LaDoris Cordell and Deanne Tucker, pianist Josephine Gandolfi, violinist Susan C. Brown, cellist Victoria Ehrlich, clarinetist Carol Somersille, trumpeter John Worley, trombonist John Monroe, percussionist Jim Kassis, flutist Stephanie McNab, saxophonist Oscar Pangilinan, and bassoonist Doug Brown, with guest artists jazz pianist Valerie Capers and bassist John Robinson. Reception for the audience provided by the non-profit Santa Rosa Culinary Apprenticeship program follows the Sunday performance.
